11 Things That Can Invalidate Wudu and Its Pillars and Sunnah

11 Things That Can Invalidate Wudu – Wudu is a way for Muslims to purify themselves by cleaning small hadas as a condition for praying. However, some people may not know much about ablution. Worship will not be valid if your ablution is broken, therefore we will discuss what can break ablution. Not only that, this article will also explain the pillars of ablution and the sunnah of ablution.

Allah SWT has ordered Muslims to cleanse themselves from hadas when they want to pray. This is already in the Al Quran QS. Al-Maidah verse 6, which reads:

Yā Ayyuhallażīna āmanū qā qumtum ilaṣ-ṣalāti fagsilụ wujụhakum wa aidiyakum ilal-marāfiqi waamsaụ ụ blue`ụsikum wa arjulakum ilal-ka’bīn, wa ing kuntum junuban `iṭi au lāmastumun-nisā`a fa lam tajidụ mā`an fa tayammamụ ṣa’īdan ṭayyiban famsaḥụ biwujụhikum wa aidīkum min-h, mā yurīdullāhu liyaj’ala ‘alaikum min ḥarajiw wa lākiy yurīdu liyuṭalakum wa liyuṭalahirakum wa liyumatalahima’ahhirakum allakum tasykurụn

Meaning: “O you who believe! When you are about to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are junub then take a bath. And if you are sick you know that on the way or coming back from a toilet (latrine) or touching a woman then you don’t get water, then do tayammum with good (holy) dust; wipe your face and your hands with it. Allah does not want to make things difficult for you, but He wants to cleanse you and perfect His favors for you so that you will be grateful.

Things That Invalidate Wudu

When we have taken ablution, it means that our body is clean and pure, then it is ready to carry out the prayer. However, there are some things that can break ablution if you do some things intentionally or not. Here are things that invalidate ablution.

1. Vomiting

Vomiting is the discharge of food or drink from the stomach out through the mouth. Not only during fasting, vomiting after ablution can also invalidate ablution.

However, there are two opinions, in the Hanafi school, vomiting can invalidate ablution if a person vomits in the full size of his mouth. Meanwhile, according to the Maliki and Shafi’i schools of thought, vomiting cannot invalidate ablution. This is because the Prophet once vomited after wudu and he did not repeat his ablution again.

2. Lost Consciousness

Loss of consciousness in question is crazy, fainting, drunkenness, and other things that make a person unconscious. Including sleep, sleep can also cancel ablution. This is because sleep, some of the functions of the body stop operating and make the body unconscious.

In accordance with a narrated hadith from Abu Dawud it is said that, “The eye is the guardian of the rectum. Therefore, whoever sleeps, it is obligatory for him to perform ablution.”

3. The discharge of Hadas from the genitals

Everything that comes out of the genitals, such as urinating, defecating, madzi water, semen, wadi water, or farting can make our ablution invalidated. All of these are hadas, there are small hadas and also big hadas. For large hadas must be cleaned with a mandatory bath.

Abu Hurairah in his hadith Rasulullah said that, “Allah will not accept someone’s prayer from you if he has a condition so he performs ablution.”

4. Out of Blood and Pus

Blood and pus, even though they do not come out through the genitals or mouth, can also invalidate one’s ablution. According to one school of thought, ablution will be invalidated if blood flows or comes out of a place that must be purified. However, if it is only one drop or two drops then the wudhu will not be broken.

This is in accordance with a hadith that the Prophet said, “Wudhu should be done for every flowing blood.”

5. Touching the genitals

After performing ablution, we should not touch the genital area, either our own or someone else’s. The genitals are basically unclean and hadas, therefore we are prohibited from touching them after ablution without any limits.

This prohibition has also been explained in the hadith narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban that the Messenger of Allah said, “Whoever brings his hand to his genitals, without any restrictions, must perform ablution.”

6. Laugh Out Loud

When we are praying and we have taken ablution, we generally have to have a polite attitude because we are worshiping Allah SWT. However, when we laugh loudly and laugh out loud, our prayer is automatically canceled, and our ablution is also cancelled. This action is contrary to the attitude when we want to pray to Allah SWT.

7. Eat Camel Meat

Eating when you have taken ablution will of course leave dirt in your mouth, this can be overcome by drinking water. However, if what you eat is camel meat then you have to repeat the ablution again. Eating camel meat, whether cooked or raw, invalidates one’s ablution.

This has been narrated in the hadith of Imam Ahmad. Rasulullah said that “Wudhu because you eat camel meat and you are not asked to do ablution because you eat goat meat.”

8. Bathing the corpse

Someone who bathes a dead body of course touches all parts of the corpse’s body. If the person has performed ablution and accidentally touches the genitals of the corpse, then the ablution can be declared null and void. He must repeat again to perform ablution so that he becomes pure again.

It is narrated in the hadith of Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas that Abu Hurairah said, “At least he should perform ablution, because usually their hands are not spared from touching the genitals of the corpse.”

9. Doubt When Wudu

When you perform ablution, you should be sure that all the hadas in your body are clean. However, when you doubt the cleanliness of your body from hadas, the ablution will be declared null and void.

Madzhab from Maliki explained that “Whoever feels sure that he is pure and then he doubts about hadas then he is obliged to perform ablution.”

10. Things that Mandatory Bathing

The thing that cancels ablution in this section is the thing that obliges you to take a bath so that the hadas can be removed from the body. Some things that invalidate ablution and oblige you to take a bath include, having sexual intercourse, discharge of semen, and infidels who convert to Islam. If you do either of these, you must first take a hadas bath, then perform ablution.

This already exists in the Hambali school which states that wudu will be invalidated in every case that requires bathing except death.

11. Contact with non-mahrams

It is not permissible to touch other people who are not their mahram. Therefore, when you have performed ablution and you intentionally or unintentionally come into contact with someone who is not a mahram, you must repeat the ablution again.

Pillars of Wudu

Wudu will be considered valid if the pillars of wudu have been followed properly, otherwise the wudu will be invalidated and you have to repeat it. Here are the pillars of wudu.

1. Reading Intentions

Just like when we want to carry out worship, where we must say the intention first before starting it. Ablution also begins with an intention that must be read, the reading of the intention must also be solemn so that the ablution is considered valid. The reading of the intention of ablution is as follows.

نَوَيْتُ الْوُضُوْءَ لِرَفْعِ الْحَدَثِ الْاَصْغَرِ فَرْضًا للَّهِ تَعَالَى

Nawaitul wudhu’a lirof’il hadasil ashghori fardhol lillaahi ta’aala.

Meaning: “I intend to perform wudu to remove small hadas fardu because of Allah Ta’aala.”

2. Washing Face

After finishing reading the intention, then the next pillar is washing the face. Wash your face with water starting from the forehead where the hair grows to the chin. This area becomes a limitation when washing the face during ablution.

3. Washing both hands up to the elbows

Then wash both hands up to your elbows. Wash starting from the fingers or from the elbow. Make sure that from the fingers to the elbows they must be exposed to ablution water. If you wear long sleeves, then open your arms up to the elbows, so that the ablution water can hit the elbows.

4. Head Wipe

Next is to rub the head. Wipe your head from the tip of your hair growth to your crown. This is in accordance with the hadith of the Prophet as follows.

Meaning: “From the friend of Al-Mughirah bin Syu’bah RA, in fact Rasulullah SAW performed ablution and rubbed the top of his head and his priesthood.” (HR. Muslim).

5. Washing the Feet Up to the Ankles

The next pillar is washing the feet up to the ankles. Wash your feet properly and properly, clean the backs of your feet, soles of your feet, between your toes up to the ankles. No need to wash up to the knees, just up to the ankles.

6. Do it in an orderly manner

The order in the case of ablution is to do all the pillars of ablution according to the order and method. Do not swap or reverse the order of ablution. Everything must be done properly and correctly in order without missing anything. After complying with the rules, wudu can be said to be valid.

Sunnah Wudu

Sunnah ablution are things that are recommended when you are doing ablution. Although the law is sunnah, but if it is done, of course, you will get a reward. Here are the sunnahs in ablution.

1. Facing Qibla

Qibla direction is a noble direction. Qibla is also the direction when we pray. So that it is sunnah to perform ablution to face the Qibla. If you don’t face the Qibla, there’s no problem, but you don’t get the reward of facing the Qibla.

2. Siwak

The next Sunnah is to have a face. This siwak is also known as a toothbrush. It is sunnah for Muslims to wear their heads or brush their teeth when performing ablution. This has been narrated in the Hadith of Abu Hurairah RA, the Messenger of Allah said that “If it doesn’t burden my people, I will really order them to use their heads every time they perform ablution.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim).

3. Read Basmalah

Next, it is sunnah to read the basmalah sentence when you want to perform ablution. This can be done before we recite the intention for ablution. The sunnah of reading the basmalah is stated in the hadith of Anas bin Malik RA that the Prophet said, “Take ablution in the name of Allah SWT.” (Narrated by Nasa’i).

4. Reciting the Wudu Intention

When performing ablution we are required to read the intention of ablution. In reading the intention, we may just read silently. However, it will be even better and get sunnah rewards if we recite the ablution intention.

5. Washing the Palms

The next sunnah is washing the palms of the hands before ablution. When washing the palms of these hands can be accompanied by reading the intention of ablution. This has been narrated in the hadith of Abu Hurairah RA that the Messenger of Allah said. “If one of you wakes up from sleep then do not put your hands in the water container until he has washed them first. Because he doesn’t know where his hands were last night.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim).

6. Gargling

Then in ablution it is also recommended to rinse the mouth. This is as narrated in the hadith of Humran RA, “It was Uthman bin Affan, rinsing his mouth and inhaling water with his nose, then spitting it out, then Uthman bin Affan said: ‘I saw Rasulullah SAW washing like this ablution.'” (HR Bukhari). and Muslims).

7. Istinsyaq

Istinsyaq is to inhale water into the nostrils and then spit it out again. This istinsyaq sunnah can be done before washing the face in the pillars of ablution. Istinsyaq has been narrated in the same hadith as gargling.

8. Wipe the whole head

The sunnah in the next ablution is to wipe the entire head. This was narrated in the hadith of Abdullah bin Yazid RA he said that, “Rasulullah SAW rubbed his head with both hands from front to back and from back to front” in another pronunciation it also reads, “He started from the front of his head so that he rubbed his hands up to the the nape of his neck, then returned his hands to their original parts.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim).

9. Wipe Both Ears

In ablution it is sunnah to wipe both ears. In wiping the ears, you have to use new water, not from water used to rub your head. This has been narrated in the hadith of Ibn Abbas he said that, “The Messenger of Allah rubbed his head and two ears. He put his two forefingers (to the inside of the ear), while his two thumbs to the outside of the earlobe. Then he rubbed the outside and inside of his ears.” (Reported by Ibn Majah).

10. Prioritize the Right Section

When performing ablution, it is sunnah to wash the body on the right side first, then continue washing the left side. This has been narrated in the hadith of Abu Hurairah RA that the Messenger of Allah said, “When you dress and perform ablution, then start from your right parts.” (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah, Ibn Khuzaimah, Ibn Hibban, and Baihaqi).
