Difference Between JEE Main and JEE Advanced

Level of Difficulty
The key difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced lies in their level of difficulty. JEE Main is a relatively less difficult examination as compared to JEE Advanced. Eligibility Criteria
Another significant difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced is their eligibility criteria. JEE Main is open to all students who have passed their Class XII examination or an equivalent examination. However, JEE Advanced can only be taken by those students who have cleared JEE Main and fall within the top 2.5 lakh candidates in the exam.
Exam Format
The exam format of JEE Main and JEE Advanced is also different. JEE Main is a computer-based test conducted in multiple sessions, while JEE Advanced is a pen-paper based test conducted in a single session. JEE Main consists of two papers – Paper 1 for engineering programs and Paper 2 for architecture programs. In contrast, JEE Advanced has two compulsory papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2 – both of which test a student’s understanding of physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
Number of Attempts
A student can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of three times in consecutive years. However, there is no such limit on the number of attempts for JEE Advanced. A candidate can appear in JEE Advanced for as many times as they wish, provided they meet the eligibility criteria each time.
