JEE Main is open to all students who have passed their Class XII examination or an equivalent examination. However, JEE Advanced can only be taken by those students who have cleared JEE Main and fall within the top 2.5 lakh candidates in the exam.

Exam Format

The exam format of JEE Main and JEE Advanced is also different. JEE Main is a computer-based test conducted in multiple sessions, while JEE Advanced is a pen-paper based test conducted in a single session. JEE Main consists of two papers – Paper 1 for engineering programs and Paper 2 for architecture programs. Number of Attempts

A student can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of three times in consecutive years. However, there is no such limit on the number of attempts for JEE Advanced. A candidate can appear in JEE Advanced for as many times as they wish, provided they meet the eligibility criteria each time.
